/depTH/, noun

In a sentence: “he understood himself with an uncanny depth”

Synonyms: profundity, complexity, intensity, deepness inward,

Significance: In no uncertain terms, depth is one’s ability to observe life and live life beyond the surface level nonsense. Welcome to our world: No depth. We’re living in a time of the great dumbing down. Depth is imperative for creating a society that functions in a healthy manner. Without depth, we flounder. Without depth, we have no foundation. Without depth, we are easily manipulated. Without depth, we have no self-awareness. The importance of depth cannot be overstated. When we have no depth of understanding (no self-awareness) we are driven at a superficial level. When a society is driven at a superficial level, the society flounders because everything is driven at an emotional, material level. We find ourselves living in a time of tremendous lack. Lack is based on superficial, material, consumer-driven behavior. Observe the scene: There is very little depth to be found in the day-to-day mainstream social stratum. Everything is based on trends. Popularity. Talking heads. Polls. Social status. Titles. It’s all a façade. No depth. It’s a glaring issue that has become merely “normal.” Now that we’ve identified a problem, it’s time to identify the solution. In positive psychology (the premise of self-actualization) we evaluate what is positive about individual humanity. Thus, what is positive about individual humanity is what is positive about the entire collective. (The microcosm). A healthy society will work to build upon its strengths and diminish its weaknesses. It goes without saying that depth of character needs to be developed within humanity, and the superficial ego needs to be diminished. Step one in the process is simply being aware of our behavior. No awareness? No depth. —our depth and/or lack of depth. ng our behavior and practicing introspection. Introspection is valuable time peacefully spent alone processing behavior, experience, and understanding. Another term for introspection is “soul searching.” In our introspection, we grow in deeper understanding of ourselves, our behavior towards others, and our course of action.
